London, Tate Modern

The Tate Modern is Britain’s national museum of international modern art from 1900 to the present day. It was created in the year 2000, but the original backside was designed by Sir Giles Gilbert Scott in 1947 as a power station (Bankside) . It was closed in down in 1981 until 1996 when the Tate trustees saw it as a potential site for a new art gallery, converted and designed by Herzog & de Meuron. The original turbine hall has become the new entrance to the gallery as well as providing a vast exhibition space. The museum opened on 12 May 2000 under the direction of Vicente Todolí.
