Linocut today XI. Graphic Award of the City of Bietigheim-Bissingen, July 20 to October 6, 2019

The international competition »Linolschnitt heute« is entering the eleventh round! Founded 30 years ago, it has since been organized every three years and has long been a fixture in professional and artistic circles. This time, 503 international artists from 30 countries applied. After a pre-selection, which was based on submitted photos, 128 applicants from Mexico to Australia, from Great Britain to Senegal followed the invitation to send in their original works. The five-member jury was spoiled for choice: all submitted works were carefully examined, discussed, sorted, debated - until finally the three award winners as well as the three further acquisitions for the collection of the Städtische Galerie were established. Look forward to varied works by 44 artists - including well-known, well-known names as well as many new discoveries by those involved for the first time.

With prize money of € 10,000 as well as purchases for the collection of the Städtische Galerie, this graphic art award from the city of Bietigheim-Bissingen is sponsoring both contemporary artists who have dedicated themselves to linocut and those who rediscover this traditional technique. The competition »Linocut today« has made an important contribution to the fact that this technique, alongside the woodcut, has established itself equally as an artistic high-pressure technique. Last but not least, in March 2018, the German UNESCO Commission declared artistic printing techniques for the Intangible Cultural Heritage in Germany.

Parallel to the linocuts from all over the world, the Städtische Galerie from its own collection shows linocuts by three outstanding South German printmakers: Almost 200 students coined Karl Rössing (1897-1987) as a professor at the Academy of Fine Arts in Stuttgart from 1947 to 1960. His passion for linocut, he gave u.a. to Robert Förch (b. 1931) and Malte Sartorius (1933-2017). The presented works show similarities as well as the respectively completely independent development of the artists.
