Typology of the halftimbered houses seen anew

Thomas Kellner half-timbered houses of the Siegen industrial area today

Siegen. On Sunday, February 14, 2021, the Siegen based fine art photographer Thomas Kellner opened his exhibition "Half-timbered houses of the Siegen industrial area today" in the Art Gallery, At 11 am, visitors arrived via Zoom and were impressed by his expressive images. The visitors who attended the opening on Zoom were the first to view Kellner's new works. The images show those half-timbered houses in Eiserfeld that Bernhard and Hilla Becher ???????photographed 50 years ago for their typology of half-timbered houses in the Siegen industrial area, which Kellner photographed in 2015 on behalf of the Siegen "Museum of Contemporary Art" for the Eiserfeld tour. The exhibition met with great interest, several colleagues and also a photography professor from Düsseldorf attended the opening to discover the extraordinary new photographs of the half-timbered houses.

A model world of half-timbered architectures

"The photographer has "played" with us in this model world - understood in the aesthetic sense - in a well-considered way" characterizes Dr. Andrea Gnam, a freelance literary scholar from Karlsruhe Kellner's work. In his exhibition, the focus is primarily on the image processing of the half-timbered houses and their expression. The author chooses a color refraction in his works, thereby depriving the photos of their colors. To enhance the contrast, he also blurs the background. His pictures invite to understand the processed photographs as a search image. What did the houses look like in the past? After the speech, Thomas Kellner led a video tour through the exhibition, which is beautifully hung in tableaus, pairs and rows. The presentation is complemented by introductory texts into the typology of the Bechers, their life and work, Kellner's new half-timbered houses, and more.

Visitors from near and far

The numerous, about 40 visitors, including from near, Mayor Steffen Mues and Councilman Arne Fries, and far, still had many questions and came to talk among themselves about the art, photography, construction and architecture. A really stimulating atmosphere had created Thomas and Helga Kellner there on the zoom channel, which kept the visitors just as in conversation with each other, as in a normal analog openings. Until the end of the lockdown, some of the pictures are on display in the Art Galerie shopping window. The exhibition catalog of the half-timbered buildings can be ordered from Seltmann Publishers for 25 Euros. The exhibition will run until  19.06.2021.
