London, Westminster Abbey

Westminster Abbey is the place of the coronation, marriage and burial of British monarchs. The history of the abbey starts in 1050, but most of the present building dates from 1245 to 1272. Westminster Abby is built in the English gothic style with Benedictine planning. Large parts were added later: Between 1503 and 1512 the chapel of Henry VII, the two west Front Towers in 1745 by Nicholas Hawksmoor and the north entrance in the 19th century. The abbey’s nave is England’s highest. The Cloyster were built between the 13th and 15th century for meditation. The octagonal Chapter house has got an original tile floor dating from 1250 and 14th century murals. The construction system is cut stone with bearing masonry. Nearly 3300 people are buried in the Church and cloisters, for example Charles Darwin, Sir Isaac Newton and David Livingstone.
