London, Piccadilly Circus

Piccadilly is a public space and road junction of five major streets: Regent Street, Shaftesbury Avenue, Piccadilly and Covent Street. It was built in 1819 to connect Regent Street with the major shopping street of Piccadilly. At the centre of the Circus stands the Shaftesbury memorial fountain, which was built in 1893 to commemorate Lord Shaftesbury, a philanthropist known for his support of the poor. There was the first illuminated advertisement in London in 1895 and even today the plaza used to be surrounded by billboards. The Piccadilly Circus is now partly pedestrian zed and a favourite place for shopping or as an entertainment area.
