FINISSAGE / CLOSING DRINKS
Saturday 17 November, 12 - 3pm

Thomas Kellner is a visual artist living and working in Siegen, Germany. The genre of his work is located somewhere between decon-structionism, cubism and montage. The artist had solo and group exhibitions in Germany, Australia, Brazil, China, France, Holland, Italy, Philippines, Spain, UK and USA. This is his second solo show in Sydney. The first show at Conny Dietzschold Gallery was by invitation of the director of the Head On Festival Sydney and the support by the Goethe Institut Sydney.

“Tango Metropolis“ shows Kellner‘s characteristic photographic works as contact sheets with architectural motifs of landmarks from all over the world, such as the Sydney Harbour Bridge, the Tokyo Tower, the Golden Gate Bridge and the Brandenburg Gate etc.

When taking a closer look at his work, the viewer realises that the images are contiguous and taken purposely in order to put them together in a certain way. It becomes apparent that there is a sophisticated concept behind it. Black horizontal strips with codes and consecutive numbers as well as thinner, vertical seemingly continuous divisions clearly show that we are dealing with film material and contact sheets. The number of single-shot exposures in one work can be up to 1296.
Kellner won the Kodak-Award for young Professionals, Stuttgart, in 1996, 4th Fine Art Award by the district Government of Dueren county, Germany in 2009 as well as the Award of Excellence, Pingyao International Photography Festival in Pingyao, China. In 2016 he was awarded the Award of Excellence - 2nd International Industrial Photography Festival, Shenyang, Tiexi, China, The Critical Mass Top 50.

His works are held in prominent public collections such as The Fox Talbot Museum, Lacock Abbey, UK. In the USA at the George Eastman House Rochester; Haverford Collection, Philadelphia; Library of Congress, Washington, District of Columbia; Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, Texas; New Mexico Museum of History, Santa Fe; North Dakota Museum of Art, Grand Forks; The Art Institute of Chicago, Illinois; The Baltimore Museum of Art, Maryland; The Boston Athenaeum; The Dayton Art Institute, Ohio; The Hood Museum, Hanover, New Hampshire and Worcester Art Museum, Massachusetts as well as the Museu de Arte Moderna in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
