Dear Madams and Sirs we appreciate every publication about Thomas kellner’s new work genius loci – two German gentlemen in the land of the tsars, which he created in the past years to honor Yekaterinburg’s 290th anniversary.

This project deals in an artistic-photographical manner with two important industrial areas in Germany and Russia, which are liked to each other through the common history of industrial culture. I’m talking of my hometown Siegen and two of the biggest cities of Russia, Yekaterinburg and Perm.
There is something that scarcely anybody knows: Yekaterinburg and Perm were founded by the native of Siegen, Georg Wilhelm Henning. Georg Wilhelm de Gennin, as he is called in Russia, October 11th 1676 till April 12th 1750, was a German born officer and artificer, who was invited from Peter the Great to Russia because of having an outstanding knowledge in metallurgy. In the 1720ies he founded the first mining schools in Russia, travelled to Europe to promote specialists in mining and built new plants in the Urals, which developed in a minimum of time to one of the most important economic and educational centre: Yekaterinburg and Perm.
In 2013 I followed the traces of Henning and photographed important enterprises in Germany and Russia to show their similarity, namely the processing of steel and metal. As result there emerged a series about the industrial architecture in the Siegerland and the Urals, that presents the heretofore little known relation between these industrial areas. The exhibition with my works started already in November in Yekaterinburg und moves afterwards to Moscow, Krasnodar, Pingyao (China) and back to Siegen. In addition, there will be a book with wonderful photographs showing on 120 pages the industrial architecture and culture of different regions, and essays telling interesting things about the Siegerland, the origins of Henning and my work as an artist.
Since 1989 I’m living in Siegen and since 1997 I’m working there as a freelance artist and photographer. My works were shown in solo exhibitions in London, Paris, Brasilia and New York. Museums, like in Houston, Chicago, Rochester and Rio de Janeiro bought my pictures for their collections. My works for the bicentenary jubilee of the Boston Athenaeum and for the 50th anniversary of Brasilia’s capitol Brasília, belong to the biggest projects of the last years that I worked on.

Thomas Kellner (geb. 1966) zeigt seine Arbeit genius loci – Zwei Siegener im Zarenland, die in den vergangenen Jahren zum 290sten Geburtstag Jekaterinburgs entstanden ist.“

In diesem Projekt setzt Thomas Kellner sich auf eine künstlerisch-fotografische Weise mit zwei wichtigen Wirtschaftsräumen in Deutschland und Russland auseinander, die eine gemeinsame Geschichte der Industriekultur verbindet. Die Rede ist von seiner Heimatstadt Siegen und zwei der größten Städte Russlands, Jekaterinburg und Perm.
Was kaum jemand wusste: Jekaterinburg und Perm sind von dem gebürtigen Siegener Georg Wilhelm Henning gegründet worden. Georg Wilhelm de Gennin, wie er in Russland genannt wird, 11. Oktober 1676 – 12. April 1750, war ein in Deutschland geborener Offizier und Feuerwerker, der aufgrund seiner beachtlichen Kenntnisse in der Metallurgie von Peter dem Großen nach Russland eingeladen wurde. In den 1720er Jahren gründete Henning Russlands erste Fachschulen für Bergwesen, reiste durch Europa, um Spezialisten im Bereich Bergbau zu werben und nach Russland zu holen und baute neue Fabriken im Ural, die sich in kürzester Zeit zu einem bedeutenden Wirtschafts- und Bildungszentrum entwickelten: Jekaterinburg und Perm.

2012 begab Kellner sich deshalb auf die Spuren Hennings und fotografierte wichtige Unternehmen in Deutschland und Russland, um ihre Gemeinsamkeit, die Verarbeitung von Stahl und Metall, fotografisch festzuhalten. Es entstand eine neue Serie über die Industriearchitektur im Siegerland und im Ural, die die bisher wenig bekannte Verbindung zwischen diesen Wirtschaftsräumen darstellt. Gezeigt werden seine Arbeiten in einer Ausstellung, die in Jekaterinburg startete und danach weiter nach Uglitsch in Russland, nach Pingyao in China, Ballarat in Australien und nun nach Gummersbach wanderte. Zusätzlich entstand in Deutschland ein Buch, das auf 140 Seiten in wunderschönen Fotografien die Industriearchitektur und -Kultur der jeweiligen Gebiete präsentiert und Interessantes über das Eisenland Siegerland, die Herkunft Hennings und seine Arbeit als Künstler erzählt.
Thomas Kellner lebt seit 1989 in Siegen, wo er seit 1997 als freischaffender Künstler tätig ist. Seine Arbeiten wurden in Einzelausstellungen unter anderem in London, Paris, Brasilien und New York gezeigt. Museen u.a. in Houston, Chicago, Rochester und Rio de Janeiro, haben seine Werke bereits in ihre Sammlungen integriert. Wichtige Großprojekte der vergangenen Jahre, waren seine Arbeiten zum 200. Jubiläum des Bostoner Athenaeums und zum 50-jährigen Geburtstag der Hauptstadt Brasiliens, Brasília.
Der Dank gilt vor allem jenen die dieses Projekt möglich gemacht haben: Boschgotthardtshütte (BGH), Deutsche Edelstahlwerke DEW, Heinrich Georg GmbH Maschinenfabrik, Graebener Group,  RWE Siegen, Sparkasse Siegen, Stadt Siegen, Tsubaki Kabelschlepp, Kreis Siegen Wittgenstein und Vetter dekoration, neben vielen Einzelnen die über crowdfundraising und Subskription zu diesem Projekt beigetragen haben
