Klompching Gallery 3/8: Video interview with Debra Klomp

An Interview with Debra Klomp Ching

Debra Klomp Ching is a co-owner of New York's Klompching Gallery. Founded in 2007, the gallery specializes in contemporary photography, which it shows throughout the year in its highly acclaimed exhibitions. The gallery's roster includes artists Max de Esteban and Elaine Duigenan - a blog post about the latter can be found elsewhere on this website. The gallery also annually presents the Rhonda Wilson Award in the course of the "Fresh" exhibition to promote and celebrate young talent in photography. As a result of the 2021 "Fresh" exhibition, I too managed to snag one of the sought-after spots in the gallery with four of my half-timbered houses. But beforehand, we interviewed Debra Klomp Ching, which you can watch in the video. She kindly took time out of her busy gallery schedule to talk with us about the gallery's beginnings, Rhonda Wilson, and her favorite artists and festivals. All Covid-compliant via Zoom, of course. ;)

In addition to her work at Klompching Gallery, Debra Klomp Ching is a freelance consultant, writer, curator and educator.

She offers creative and professional consulting services to photographers working in artistic spaces, as well as collectors of contemporary photography. She has also been and continues to be an experienced reviewer of portfolios at numerous photography review festivals.

Her publications have appeared in major magazines and journals, such as Magenta Magazine and photo-eye Booklist, and she was the editorial director of (re)collect - Jonathan Shaw (2006), among others.

Klomp Ching has taught photography history at the University of Derby (UK) and Coventry of Derby (UK) and is currently an Adjunct Lecturer at the School of Visual Arts in New York. She completed a BA (Hons) in Photographic Studies and an MA in Critical History and Theory of Photography.

Debra Klomp Ching lives in New York with Darren Ching, her husband and co-founder of the Gallery.
