Isbjerget in Waves
Waves are found in various areas of life. There are acoustic sound waves, mechanical waves in physics, Mexican waves in football stadiums or waves in the water. The one thing all this kinds of waves have in common is their dynamic and power which arises from the movement of waves. The origin of the word waves can be traced back to the Old High German word “wellan” which roughly means “to revolutionize sth.”
The form of waves not only brings movement but also change in the contact sheets of the artist. His project „flucticulus“ breaks with his familiar creational method. Ceramic objects and collages connected to waves and the architecture of Isbjerget extend his former art form, photography. The Danish word for Iceberg is "Isbjerget", just like the Name of the famaous building Kellner combines with waves in his work. Referring to multiple connotation we have with waves.
The power of waves
Tsunami are very different to ordinary waves. Their destructive power caused the death of 230 000 people in the catastrophe of Thailand in 2004. Kellner uses the massive power of this wavs and the structure of Isbjerget in his recent work. Throughout art history the motive of water and waves has always been of importance. The probably most known depiction waves comes from Hukasai („The Great Wave of Kanagava“). His print shows foaming waves. The artist Thomas Kellner gets in line with previous depictions of waves, but keeps sight of his famous architectural photography refereing to Isbjerget. In his work „Springflut“ pictures like waves come to life, in contrast to rigid and stiff rectangles and the building of Isbjerget. The motives of waves and other objects like parts of Isbjerget seem to dance and swing and thereby break with traditional architectural photography.
