Moving Monuments: Thomas Kellner at VisuleX Gallery, Hamburg
From September 28 to October 19, 2024, VisuleX Gallery for Photography in Hamburg presented “Moving Monuments. Thomas Kellner – Black & White”. The exhibition brought together early black-and-white works from 1997–2005 and selected colour photographs, tracing the development of Kellner’s fragmented views of architecture.
Black & White: The beginnings of Kellner’s fragmented architecture
“Moving Monuments” explored the beginnings of Thomas Kellner’s distinctive approach to photographing architecture. Rarely exhibited black-and-white works offered insight into his early experiments and the development of his contact-sheet compositions.
In 1997, an interpretation of the Eiffel Tower, conceived as a homage to Robert Delaunay and Orphism, marked a turning point. Architecture became the starting point for increasingly complex compositions assembled from individual analogue photographs. The contact sheet became the finished artwork.
In these early black-and-white works, structure, rhythm and the relationship between the building and its photographic fragments take centre stage. Familiar landmarks appear to shift, tilt and move as the viewer’s gaze travels across the image.
The Hamburg exhibition placed these works alongside selected colour photographs, including a night view of the Empire State Building in New York. This juxtaposition connected Kellner’s early explorations with his later use of colour.
The exhibition coincided with “Thomas Kellner: Sights” at the Landesmuseum Oldenburg, which ran from September 28, 2024, to January 12, 2025.
