The physician Michael Schupmann has assembled about 700 black-and-white photographs into an exquisite collection. Starting with the members of the "fotoform" group, who attracted attention after the Second World War through unusual perspectives and darkroom experiments, to reportage photography by Barbara Klemm or Will McBride and fashion photography by F.C. Gundlach, Hub's flute or Walde Huth, and the works of digital pioneer Andreas Müller-Pohle.
From 14 November 2020 to 14 February 2021, the Landesmuseum für Kunst und Kulturgeschichte Oldenburg will present a selection of around 200 works from the Schupmann Collection. "With a host of prominent names and many prominent photographs, the show covers the spectrum of West German black and white photography between the end of the war and the fall of the Wall with almost encyclopaedic zeal," the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung praised the exhibition, which is being shown in the north for the first time.
The exhibition "Schupmann Collection - Photography in West Germany" is a multifaceted foray through the history of photography. For all their diversity, the photographs have one thing in common: their high artistic quality. They open up a new view of the world, surprising perspectives and deep insights into West German society.
The Schupmann Collection brings together the works of many important German auteur photographers and all significant artistic movements in West Germany from 1945 to 2000: "subjective" and staged photography, works of visualism from the 1980s and 1990s, touching reportage photographs and sober documentary shots as well as important works of fashion and object photography.
