INTIM 2003/4

INTIM - work by my students from Justus- Liebig-University, Giessen 2003/4

Intimate

If you are expecting round, soft forms, flesh and nude skin, then you will also find that represented here. However, according to the composers of the photographic images, the title has been understood on a broader basis. In this case, Intimate not only means showing intimacy but also going into intimate spheres, private spaces, closeness, everyday situations, personal spheres and that which is deeper than the superficial. Intimate shows a collection of photographic studies, which were created by the students at the Department of Art Pedagogy of the Justus Liebig University in Giessen/Germany. The images not only demonstrate how differently one can become closer - face-to-face or towards oneself, but also to a city, not to mention the image itself. The composers are not attempting to follow in the tracks of nude imagery but are aiming to widen the concept of privacy in photography in different ways. Aspects of a journalistic or documentary style as well as those of the experimental, abstract or conceptual styles have been pursued. Experimenting and finding a personal image language stood just as much in the foreground as each composer worked in his own laboratory of artistic freedom. Each developed his or her own unmistakable image language in the area of choice – at home, in the bedroom during the morning hours, at the hairdresser’s, through the spyhole of a door, or in the sauna – personal and intimate insights. Insights that not only allow the intimate surface of the image to be shown but also its closeness to its originator and thus, his or her own intimacy as a person behind the camera. Such images can reach our emotions, let us dream, arouse associations and possibly cause goose bumps, perhaps render us speechless – to an image whose language just does not consist of words.

Intim
