Steven Benson ist Professor und stellvertretender Vorsitzender des Southeast Center for Photographic Studies am Daytona State College in Florida. Steven Benson erhielt seinen MFA von der Cranbrook Academy of Art. Er erhielt drei Creative Artist Grants des Michigan Council for the Arts und ein NEA/ArtsMidwest Fellowship. Zu seinen Sammlungen gehören das Museum of Fine Art-Houston, das Detroit Institute of Arts, das Portland Art Museum, das Centre Georges Pompidou und das Museet for Fotokunst-Dänemark. Artikel über seine Arbeit sind in European Photography (Deutschland), Katalog (Dänemark), Creative Camera (England), American Photo, CameraArts, Urbanautica, PhotoMondo.dk und Cerise Press erschienen. Einzelausstellungen fanden u. a. im Centre Georges Pompidou sowie auf Fotofestivals, Biennalen und Triennalen in Argentinien, Südkorea, Deutschland, Syrien, Polen, China, Dänemark und beim FotoFest (2004 und 2008) statt.  Sein Buch, The Cost of Power in China: The Three Gorges Dam and the Yangtze River Valley" wurde von Black Opal Press (2006) mit Essays von A.D. Coleman und Dai Qing veröffentlicht.  Sein Werk war 2012 Gegenstand einer Retrospektive im Southeast Museum of Photography mit dem Titel "Steven Benson: Space and Time-Forty Years in Photographs". Seit mehr als 25 Jahren ist er als Pädagoge, Kunst- und Werbefotograf freiberuflich tätig. Er ist Mitglied des National Board of Directors der Society for Photographic Education und des Vorstands der American Society of Media Photographers (ASMP) - Central Florida.

Steven hat sich auf redaktionelle Fotografie, Jahresberichte und Werbung spezialisiert.  Er hat Aufträge in ganz Nordamerika und Europa sowie in Mexiko, der Karibik, Russland, Brasilien, den Niederlanden und Japan für Kunden wie AT&T, Ford, Chrysler, General Motors, Unisys, Borg-Warner, Allied Signal, Hughes, JVC Technology Corporation und Canadian National Railroad erhalten, um nur einige zu nennen.

The cultural anthropologist

Ich betrachte meine Beschäftigung mit der Fotografie als die eines Kulturanthropologen. Das Foto "One Love", Jamaika 2004, ist ein Beispiel für dieses Konzept. Ich verwende häufig eine ästhetische Strategie, die verschiedene Widersprüche innerhalb des Bildes beinhaltet. In diesem Fall ist es das "Ideal", das durch das gemalte Wandbild repräsentiert wird, und das "Reale", das durch das "No Urine"-Schild dargestellt wird. Es sind die Informationen, die beide Schilder zusammen transportieren - und die eine komplexe Frage über Wahrnehmung und Gesellschaft aufwerfen.
