Facets of the City is a photographic project conceived as a contemporary homage to August Sander on the 150th anniversary of his birth, reconsidering how society can be represented through photography in the twenty-first century.

Between 2023 and 2026, Thomas Kellner portrayed 1,056 people—approximately one percent of the population of Siegen, Germany. Selected according to demographic criteria such as age, gender, education, and migration history, the participants form a statistical cross-section of the city. The work constitutes a "Visual Microcensus": an artistic model translating demographic reality into a photographic representation of collective identity.

Rather than documenting individuals in isolation, the series examines the relationships between biography, profession, and social environment. Each portrait integrates personal appearance, gestures, clothing, and surroundings, allowing the individual to be understood both as a unique person and as part of a broader social structure.

The project continues Kellner’s artistic investigation into deconstruction and reconstruction. While his architectural works dismantle and reassemble monuments, this project applies that conceptual approach to society itself: the city is represented not through its buildings, but through its people.

While Sander developed a typological portrait of German society, Kellner’s Visual Microcensus seeks connection over classification. Diversity is understood as a dynamic condition. Ultimately, Facets of the City operates simultaneously as portraiture, sociological observation, and conceptual photography, positioning the portrait as a reflection on the evolving identity of society itself.

The portrait has been one of the most significant forms of artistic representation throughout the history of visual culture. Across painting, sculpture, and photography, the portrait focuses on the human being as an individual while simultaneously reflecting social, cultural, and historical contexts. Its purpose extends beyond the physical likeness of a person; it seeks to reveal aspects of identity, personality, and the relationship between the individual and society.

In art history, portraits have developed through various forms of representation. They may present individuals in a direct and naturalistic manner or explore more abstract approaches in which personal identity becomes less explicit. Whether as an individual portrait, self-portrait, or group portrait, the recognition of the depicted person remains a central element. Composition, posture, gaze, and perspective influence how a person is perceived and contribute to the interpretation of the image.

Photography fundamentally transformed the possibilities of portraiture in the nineteenth century. With the introduction of affordable formats such as the carte de visite developed by André Adolphe-Eugène Disdéri in the 1850s, photographic portraits became accessible to a broader public. Portrait photography moved from the studio into everyday environments and became an important medium for documenting individuals and social structures.

This tradition reached a defining moment with August Sander’s monumental project People of the Twentieth Century. Through his systematic portraits of people from different professions, generations, and social backgrounds, Sander created a visual archive of German society. His approach demonstrated that a portrait can represent both an individual person and the larger conditions of an era.

After August Sander continues this artistic dialogue by examining contemporary society through portraiture. Inspired by Sander’s method of observation and classification, the project reflects on how identity, diversity, and social structures are represented today. It connects the historical legacy of documentary photography with a contemporary perspective on the human condition.

 

Facets of the City: A Visual Microcensus of Siegen, a major city in Germany. The project includes people born in Siegen, newcomers, workers, and those who spend their free time there. Through his body of work comprising 1,065 portraits, Thomas Kellner presents 1% of Siegen’s urban society. The population at that time was 105,579 (January 27, 2023).
Thomas Kellner set out to reflect the diversity of the population in his portraits, as evidenced by the following analysis. He photographed people from diverse backgrounds, cultures, age groups, and educational levels, as well as people with disabilities.
Of those portrayed, 55% were women, 44% were men, and four were non-binary.  45% were born in Siegen. 70% of the participants live in Siegen, and 92% of those surveyed cited Siegen as their place of work or leisure.
The series and the journey featured all kinds of people from around the world, with diverse stories and abilities. Many people with disabilities were part of this diverse community and were happy to participate in the series. About 14% agreed to be featured. Since one in five people in Siegen has a registered disability, the call for participants explicitly sought out people with special abilities in order to present as representative a picture of the city of Siegen as possible.
The goal of the series was to showcase the city’s cultural diversity, which is why participants’ ethnic backgrounds were recorded in addition to their gender. All cultures were warmly welcomed. Participants came from all over the world. People from various European countries, as well as from Africa, the Americas, Australia, and Asia, took part. There were also individuals listed here as stateless or “no information provided.” All participants were also asked about their migration background, to which approximately 20% of respondents answered “yes.”
Outside of Europe, the highest participation rate—3%—came from Asia. This was followed by Africa at 2% and the Americas at 2% (U.S./Canada 1%, South and Central America 1%). Australia and Oceania were represented by one person.
Europe: Overall, 86% of the participants in the project were German. The second-most-represented cultural group, at about 4%, was the former Soviet Union (as designated in the statistics from the City of Siegen). This was followed by Italy at 2%. Spain, France, and Turkey were each represented by 1%. People from the following countries also participated, each accounting for less than 1%: Belgium, Finland, Greece, Ireland, Latvia, the Netherlands, Austria, Poland, Romania, Switzerland, and the United Kingdom.
In Facets of the City, Thomas Kellner depicts all age groups in society. At 42%, the 60–69 age group is the most represented. 21% identified as being in the 50–59 age group. Next came the 40–49-year-olds at 13% and the 20–29 age group at around 13%. Twelve percent of participants were in the 70–79 age group. Younger participants (ages 10–19) also took an active part, accounting for 8%. Children aged 0–10 made up 5% of the participants, slightly ahead of the 80–89 age group at 2%. Even the oldest members (90+) of our society participated, accounting for 1%. At the time this portrait was created, our oldest participant was 100 years old.
On his journey through Siegen’s community, Thomas Kellner met many people with diverse educational backgrounds. Through his portraits and group photos, he brought together people with different levels of schooling. 62% reported having completed high school. The second-most common educational background was the intermediate secondary school, at 23%. Nineteen percent attended the lower secondary school. Additionally, 13% of participants attended the technical high school. Since many younger people took part in the project, 10% of the participants are still in school. Less than one percent has no high school diploma.
Information was then also provided on the various income levels. The income figures are listed here as net income in euros per year. 36% reported having an income of less than €15,000. 27% have an annual income of less than €33,000. 27% reported an income of less than €70,000. About 11% earn more than €70,000.
This analysis is based on statistics from the city of Siegen, against which our evaluation was compared. To calculate the realistic percentage shares of the respective categories, the number (in %) of, for example, women was first calculated relative to the total number of participants. This resulted in the target percentage of women in the project needed to realistically reflect Siegen’s society. There were slight deviations between the target percentage and the actual percentage. For example, the Facets of the City project represents only about 44% men. This represents a deviation of about 5%. Accordingly, the percentage of male residents in the city of Siegen does not correspond exactly to the participation of men in the project. It is also striking that Thomas Kellner’s age (60) is clearly reflected in the participation data. In particular, the age groups 50–59 (21%) and 60–69 (42%) deviate significantly from the percentage of residents in those age groups in Siegen. According to the statistics, there would thus need to be a deviation of about 30% (for the 60–69 age group) to accurately represent this age group.
The study accompanying the series Facets of the City not only highlights the diversity of a society with its varied people but also showcases their personalities, special talents, amazing and unique stories, and a sense of unity and togetherness.
 

Thomas Kellner was born in Bonn, Germany, in 1966. He studied Art, Sociology, Politics, and Economics at the University of Siegen. In 1996, he received the Kodak Young Talent Award, encouraging him to pursue a professional career as an artist. Since then, Kellner has lived and worked in Siegen as an artist and curator of photographic exhibition projects. In 2003, he was elected to the German Society for Photography (DGPh), followed by his appointment to the German Photographic Academy (DFA) in 2026. Since 1993, Kellner has presented solo exhibitions in Germany, Australia, Brazil, China, Denmark, France, Iceland, Moldova, the Netherlands, Poland, Russia, Spain, the United Kingdom, and the United States. His photographs have also been featured in numerous group exhibitions and publications and are held in important public and private collections worldwide.

Thomas Kellner is internationally known for photographic works based on the principle of fragmentation. This approach characterizes both his portrait series, which explore the diversity and complexity of contemporary society, and his depictions of architectural landmarks from around the world, where fragmented structures invite new ways of seeing familiar monuments. His creative process combines deconstruction and reconstruction by dividing a subject into numerous carefully planned analogue photographs before assembling them into a single composition. Frequently discussed in relation to Cubist strategies, Kellner's method has been described by the art historian Prof. Dr. Irina Chmyreva as a "visual analytical synthesis." His photographs imitate the movement of the human eye, revealing individual visual fragments that gradually merge into a coherent image. Rather than documenting reality from a single fixed viewpoint, Kellner reconstructs the way we perceive architecture, people, and society.

This artistic approach also defines After August Sander. Building on Sander's documentary vision, Kellner's contemporary portraits explore identity, diversity, and social structures, demonstrating how photography continues to shape our understanding of society in the twenty-first century.

Facets of the City documents the diversity and complexity of contemporary urban society through the medium of portrait photography. Based on Thomas Kellner's large-scale project comprising more than 1,000 portraits created in Siegen, the publication presents a carefully curated selection of 60 portraits accompanied by biographical texts. Together, they offer insight into the individual lives, experiences, and social backgrounds of the city's inhabitants while forming a collective portrait of contemporary society.

Each portrait is conceived as a carefully staged yet authentic representation of an individual. Rather than focusing solely on physical appearance, Kellner reveals personal histories, cultural identities, and social relationships. Viewed together, the portraits interact with one another, creating a visual narrative that reflects the diversity of a community. In this way, the publication preserves not only faces but also stories, continuing the documentary tradition established by August Sander in the Siegerland during the early twentieth century.

The book establishes a direct dialogue with Sander's landmark project People of the Twentieth Century (Antlitz der Zeit). Like Sander, Kellner seeks to portray society through the lives of individuals, demonstrating how portrait photography can reveal broader social realities. At the same time, After August Sander extends this concept into the twenty-first century, examining contemporary identities shaped by cultural diversity, demographic change, and urban life.

Beyond its photographic content, Facets of the City is an interdisciplinary publication. Scholarly essays by Moritz Neumüller, Thomas Meyer, and Noa-Kristin Strunk examine Kellner's work from perspectives including photography, art history, and social identity. Together, the photographs and essays position the publication as both an artistic monograph and a scholarly contribution to contemporary documentary photography, demonstrating the continuing relevance of portraiture as a medium for understanding society.

August Sander (1876–1964) was one of the most influential photographers of the twentieth century and a pioneer of documentary photography. Born in Herdorf, Germany, he developed an early interest in photography before refining his technical skills while working with photographer Georg Jung after his military service. Following several years of travel across Germany, Sander opened his first photographic studio in Linz in 1904 and later established himself in Cologne in 1910. During the 1920s, his association with the Cologne Progressives reinforced his ambition to create an objective visual record of society. His monumental project People of the Twentieth Century (Menschen des 20. Jahrhunderts) became one of the most significant portrait archives in photographic history, portraying people from every social class and profession with remarkable precision and respect. Rather than seeking idealized images, Sander documented individuals as representatives of their social and cultural environments, creating a lasting sociological portrait of his era. His systematic approach, clarity of composition, and commitment to visual truth have influenced generations of photographers, artists, and historians worldwide. The enduring relevance of his work continues to inspire contemporary artistic projects such as After August Sander, which revisit and reinterpret his vision while reflecting the social realities of the twenty-first century.

Published in 1929, Face of Our Time: Sixty Photographs of German People (Antlitz der Zeit) by August Sander (1876–1964) is regarded as one of the most influential photobooks in the history of documentary photography. The publication presents sixty portraits of people from Germany, including farmers, craftsmen, industrial workers, professionals, and academics. The portraits direct the viewer's attention to the individuality of each sitter while placing them within their social and professional context.

Rather than portraying exceptional individuals, Sander sought to create a representative image of society. Each photograph stands as an independent portrait, yet together they form a broader visual study of the social structures of the Weimar Republic. Through this systematic approach, Face of Our Time reveals the diversity, complexity, and transformation of German society during the early twentieth century and laid the foundation for Sander's lifelong project People of the Twentieth Century.

The book opens with an introduction by the renowned German writer Alfred Döblin and was first published by Kurt Wolff Verlag in 1929. In 1936, the National Socialist regime banned the publication because its objective portrayal of society conflicted with official ideology. Decades after Sander's death, the book was republished and gradually came to be recognized as a landmark of photographic literature and documentary practice.

Today, Face of Our Time remains an essential reference for photographers, historians, and curators. Its influence extends far beyond its historical context and continues to inspire contemporary projects such as After August Sander, demonstrating how portrait photography can document social realities while preserving the individuality and dignity of every person depicted.
